Joe Vig's Albums I Like Better Than Thriller PDF Print E-mail

Desert Island disc is what I wrote of Tracy Bonham for Allmusic.com, one of my first reviews about 9 years ago - and one of my editors, a great editor, wrote back "it's too soon to call this a desert island disc." I disagreed then and still disagree today. This is a tremendous work that deserves a special place

These discs are ones I would take on a Desert Island, that old cliche is a grea indicator of what those discs we have played into the ground - or could easily play into the ground. There are my NDID Nouveau Desert Island Discs, and my Traditionals. All albums do it for me more than Michael Jackson's Thriller (which has 2 great songs) and The Eagles' Greatest Hits (which has one good song, "New Kid In Town").

Traditional Joe Vig Desert Island Discs - Pepper, Abbey Road, and George Harrison's All Things Must Pass

Ram actually tried to sneak its way onto here...the photo appeared by mistake...it went to its category as "almost" (see below)

Two Phases of Lou - The V.U. and Nico expanded edition, BERLIN

The Beach Boys Boxed Set

Jimi Hendrix Box Set

Tommy James Crimson & Clover (and Cellophane Symphony)

Stones Hot Rocks, Stones Exile On Main Street - two key components of the first two phases of their career

Traffic Low Spark Of The High Heel Boys

3 ALMOST BUT NOT QUITE

The Cars Deluxe Edition

DESERT ISLAND SINGLES

1)John Lennon "Instant Karma"

2)Bobby Hebb "Sunny"

3)Doris Troy "Just One Look"

4)The Kingsmen "Louie, Louie"

5)Bobby Hebb "You Want To Change Me" (Northern Soul classic)

6)The Party's Over (Hopelessly In Love With You) Journey

7)Bessie Banks "Go Now"

8)Melissa Manchester "Whenever I Call You Friend"

9)Manassas "Pensamiento" - This should have been a huge hit for Steven Stills. It is Malo's "Suavecito" by way of "Love The One You're With". I'm not even a big Stills fan, but this is tremendous as is "Treasure" by Manassas.

10)Manassas "Treasure" - It sounds like Woodstock gone Stephen Stills

11)Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young "Woodstock"

I have a playlist. Now those who know me will say "Journey?" - but "Don't Stop Believing" won me over as it closed out The Sopranos, and The Party's Over has always been one of my all-time-favorite secret closet delights. I paid the 99 cents to download it so...being the cheapskate I am, you know I gotta love it.

12)One Night Stand - Janis Joplin (Barry Flast of the latter-day Jefferson Starship co-wrote this monster should-be hit)

13)Spanky & Our Gang "I'd Like To Get To Know You"

14)Olivia Newton-John "Make A Move On Me"

15)Kenny Rogers & Dolly Parton with The Bee Gees "Islands In The Stream"

16)The Bee Gees "To Love Somebody" and/or "Fanny Be Tender"

17)Blue Oyster Cult by way of Ian Hunter "Goin' Through The Motions"

19 Boston area bands cover Aerosmith in a unique way

FIRST, A LITTLE HISTORY

Executive Producer Eric Boyer has released the long-awaited project envisioned by legendary New England booking agent, the late Mickey O'Halloran and it is not your usual tribute to a major rock attraction, specifically for the reason that of the four tributes released by the Bo-Town crew this one focuses on groups from the region covering an area band. After the Motown tribute (Botown does Motown) and the Boston Does The Beatles (see the editor's review on Artist Direct by clicking the link) there was more of a local focus when the late Jimmy Miller re-mastered BOSTON GETS STONED. It was specifically because of my involvement as business partner/manager of the iconic record producer of Blind Faith, George Clinton, The Plasmatics, Traffic and Motorhead (oh, and The Rolling Stones)that he was available to oversee the majority of the tracks on that release. (contrary to the credit of "producer", Jimmy only produced the track "Live With Me" by The Swinging Steaks)

19 track

1)Seasons Of Wither - The Bristols (Tyler)

2)Sweet Emotion - Kip Martin & The Merles (Tyler/Hamilton)

3)Round and Round - Steve Barry (Tyler/Whitfield)

4)Home Tonight - Alizon Lissance (Tyler)

5)Crazy - The Chance Gardner Band (Tyler, Perry, Child)

6)Walk This Way - James Montgomery Band (Tyler/Perry)

7)Last Child - Black Number Nine (Tyler/Whitford)

8)Let The Music Do The Talking - The Strangemen (Perry)

9)Cheese Cake - Charley Dee Blues Band (Tyler/Perry)

10)Mama Kin - King Memphis (Tyler)

11)Toys In The Attic - Austin's Dead (Tyler/Perry)

12)Joanie's Butterfly - Jah Spirit (Tyler/Crespo/Douglas)

13)Back In The Saddle - Jada Tringale (Tyler/Perry)

Boston Gets Stoned

1)Live With Me - The Swinging Steaks - Produced by Jimmy Miller

2)Can You Hear Me Knocking (actually "Can't You Hear Me Knocking") - Release

3)Black Limousine - The Derangers

4)Sway - Laurie Geltman

5)Dead Flowers - Ms Xanna Don't

6)Gimme Shelter - The Black featuring John Kalishes and Adrian Medeiros

7)Star Star - Snidely Whiplash

8)Rocks Off - Zug Zug

9)Brown Sugar - Le Compte, Joe Viglione

10)Street Fighting Man - The Slaves

11)Soul Survivor - Torn & Frayed

12)Play With Fire - Lou Miami

13)Love In Vain - Chance & The Crashers

14)Dandelion - Kathy Lepore

15)Sittin' On A Fence - John Lincoln Wright

16)Salt Of The Earth - Robin Lane

17)Miss You - Posse NFX (formerly Gang Star Posse)

18)Jumpin' Jack Flash - Chuck White & Digger

19)Now I've Got A Witness - The Lyres

It says "Produced by The Jimmy Miller", but that's incorrect, Jimmy re-mastered the disc with engineer (and Swallow guitarist) Phil Greene with two of the tracks tacked-on after the fact, "Brown Sugar", produced and performed by yours truly (at least I was Jimmy's business partner and co-produced many tracks with him) as well as Mono Mann and The Lyre's cut,

Joe Viglione & Jimmy Miller, who both produced on this album separately, were in L.A. in 1986. Vig met Gladys Knight producer Kenny Kerner at Music Connecton magazine - and Kenny wrote up a story on Jimmy. Molly Day was at the office and struck up a friendship that has lasted to this day. Janis Reed's scribblings are from her forthcoming book "My Life With Rolling Stones Producer Jimmy Miller" by Janis Reed.

Legendary Rolling Stones / Traffic / Blind Faith producer Jimmy Miller and Varulven Records president / producer Joe Viglione were involved in the BOSTON GETS STONED project for the late Mickey O'Halloran's Botown Records.

Some of this is redundant with the above, but here's most of JANIS REED's review.

Mr. Miller was under contract to Miller/Viglione Productions, Inc. in 1988 when his wife, the very late Gereldine Miller, was found guilty of stabbing rock singer Jo Jo Laine at The New Kids On The Block studio "Mission Control" in Westford, Mass. Gereldine stole the company car when the President of the Corporation had the license plate retrieved because of Gereldine's misconduct. So Jimmy Miller mastered the Boston Gets Stoned album on the q.t. and although the late Mickey O'Halloran splashed PRODUCED BY THE JIMMY MILLER on the cover, it's not entirely accurate. Jimmy did produce THE SWINGING STEAKS doing "Live With me" which is followed by Release (who are they?) doing "Can't You Hear Me Knocking", The Derangers (and who are they???) doing "Black Limousine", Laurie Geltman Band on "Sway", the always wonderful Miss Xanna Don't on "Dead Flowers" shortly before she vanished to Texas, the incredible John Kalishes (from Ben Orr's band) and Adrian Medeiros (from 60s legends Tangerine Zoo) on "GIMME SHELTER", Snidely Whiplash doing "Star Star", Zug Zug on "Rocks Off", The Count (Le Compte) with a fabulous "Brown Sugar" - and this is the only place where you can find this take, from the "Sweet Pea" production sessions of Boston rapper Sweet Pea, The Slaves on "Street Fighting Man", Torn & Frayed do "Soul Survivor", The late Tim Doherty in his drag guise as "Lou Miami" - posted here as "Lucifer Miami" with "Play With Fire" (Lou/Tim was best known for his campy "To Sir With Love" send up), Chance & The Crashers singing "Love In Vain", Kathy Lepore on a decent "Dandelion", legendary John Lincoln Wright & The Sourmash Boys with "Sitting On A Fence", equally legendary Robin Lane singing "Salt Of The Earth", Posse NFX (formerly Gang Star Posse) on MISS YOU, a dreadful band called Digger ruining "Jumpin' Jack Flash" (hey, you can't win 'em all) and The Lyres performing "Now I've Got A Witness." The Count and The Lyres tracks were NOT mastered by Jimmy Miller, though Joe Vig sampled from the original Brown Sugar which Jimmy did produce; Mono Mann of The Lyres probably produced his own track. And there you have it - more info than you've ever read on BOSTON GETS STONED. Mickey O sent the tapes to Rhode Island for Jimmy Miller & Phil Greene to e.q.; Joe Viglione was hired for publicity so Mickey didn't find a lawsuit for "tortious interference with advantageous relations" and everyone was inevitably happy except that the Digger track got stuck on the disc for political reasons. Would make a great re-release with different tracks - LOTS of bands submitted tapes but who knows where they are with the passing of Jimmy Miller, Jo Jo Laine, Mickey O'Halloran and Gereldine, dear departed Gereldine.

Jo Jo Laine was very upset when Jimmy passed away, but mused "Gereldine could be waiting for him on the other end...with a hatchet" (an exact quote.) Jo Jo Laine's "Bitch" from her forthcoming album would make a nice edition to this if we re-release and yank the Digger track! (C)2005 Rock Critic Janis Reed. Don't touch this copy without giving credit or Gereldine might be waiting for YOU on the other end...with her hatchet.

Joe Viglione & Jimmy Miller's work together was extensive, though they worked on BOSTON GETS STONED through different offices. Their work also appears on Sinbad Record's Ball One Strike Two out of Kentucky. Miller also produced Joe Vig performing Willie "Loco" Alexander's "Radio Heart" on the "Play New Rose For Me" vinyl and CD compilations.

Mr. Viglione has produced over two dozen additional compilation albums since the 1970s including The Boston Bootleg Vol. 1 and Boston Bootleg Vol. 2, Boston Rock & Roll Anthology Albums Vol 1-20, The Mass. Hard Rock/Heavy Metal album, The Boston Jazz Anthology Vol. 1, The U.S. Anthology 1; he was publicist and an artist on Boston Gets Stoned - a New England tribute to The Rolling Stones co-produced by Jimmy Miller, has had tracks on a number of New Rose compilations in Paris (along with doing A & R work for the label) and has a new CD radio series, "The Demo That Got The Deal" Vol. 1, based on his program on the 50,000 watt rocker 93.7 FM WCGY which aired from 1991-1993. "Demo That Got The Deal" vol. 2 is still in the works.
