The Mott The Hoople Collection - Verden Allen PDF Print E-mail
Written by Joe Viglione

Verden Allen

A new album from rock & roll's "forgotten boy", to swipe a line from Iggy Pop, Verden Allen's enormous keyboards that were such a novel part of the Mott The Hoople sound are back in full force on My Masochistic Side, a drenched-in-red eight page booklet on the exquisite Angel Air label, one of the finest record labels in the world. All things Mott The Hoople are housed on Peter Purnell's label, from The Reluctant Dog by Steve Holley (Ian Hunter drummer) to live discs and all sorts of odds and ends that fans adore.

With Mott The Hoople reuniting (kind of like Sean Connery making a James Bond movie entitled Never Say Never Again) there will be Mott-mania on the planet come this October. Gemmzine plans on covering The Hoople's resurgence with a vengeance.

Verden Allen pulls a Paul McCartney / Emmit Rhodes by playing all the instruments and arranging and producing all the songs on this recording made between January and May, 2009 at T.T. Studios in West Glamorgan, South Wales, UK

Track 4 "Don't Do This To Me" is more Dylan than Ian Hunter at his most Dylan-esque, the heavy keyboards and the questioning making for a delightful little pop tune that Zimmerman himself could have a ball covering. The jangling guitars and multi-keyboards all played by Verden (is that guitaline from the New Vaudeville Quintet's "Winchester Cathedral"? )

Les Mots Assasins

Listening to "Faut qu'j'arrête", the title track - "Les Mots Assassins" and "Tu n'es pas seul à rêver" on MySpace it is so obvious that Mikael Ferreira has all the elements that go into writing hit songs and great potential for stardom. The guitar playing is great, as is the production with many haunting elements in both the melody and instrumentation.

Listen to the music here:

Tu n'es pas seul à rêver

Le pantin qui s'agite

Entre 2 rives

Faut qu'j'arrête

A quoi ça rime

Les mots assassins

La petite fée

Arracher la peau

Question humaine

Les idées roses

Pour en arriver là

About Mikael Ferreira

Peter Mulvey's "The Long Haul Tour"

Biking 1100 miles to perform 10 shows in 17 days :: September 9-26, 2009

PMulvey 09 Bike - ph cr Jay HollisFrom September 9-26, Milwaukee-based, internationally-touring singer-songwriter Peter Mulvey will again take to
his bicycle for a concert tour. This year's third annual bike/concert tour will not follow the previous years' path, when he rode a "circular route in
Wisconsin" concept. The Long Haul Tour begins September 9 with a ferry ride from Milwaukee to Muskegon, MI, where Peter will take to his recumbent bike
rigged with guitar and travel necessities and pedal to Grand Rapids for the tour's kick-off show. From there it's on to three more Michigan shows, then
due east for three shows in New York state, and another three in Massachusetts - with daily rides this year ranging from 40 to 101 miles.
It's no coincidence that Peter decided to expand his bike tour - which commences less than a month after the release of his new CD, LETTERS FROM A
FLYING MACHINE (August 11/Signature Sounds). LETTERS and THE LONG HAUL tour share a common theme: both are a nod to future generations. LETTERS is a
collection of original songs, plus spoken word recordings of four of the many letters Peter has written to his nieces and nephews since they were born. The letters and songs work together to assert that love is what
outlasts us all; a message he's hoping to convey to the generations following his. And touring by bicycle dovetails neatly with that message.
Says Mulvey, "No matter what you do, it's worth asking yourself if you can do it differently, if you can do it more sustainably. Can I bike to work?
Even if 'work' takes me a thousand miles? For me, that's a question that's been challenging and very, very fun to answer. And it's a question each of
us owes it to future generations to ask." Fellow songwriter Brianna Lane will also travel the entire tour by bicycle
as the opening act. Bolstered on much of the route by a few other cyclist friends, Mulvey and Lane will travel with all their gear, without a support
vehicle. "This is going to be a riot," says Mulvey with a grin. "Traveling over land, under our own power - that's elemental stuff. I'm looking
forward to seeing what it does to the songs every night."
Please visit <http://www.myspace.com/petermulvey> Peter's MySpace page for training entries, video from his 2007 and 2008 bike tours, and notes from

the road once the trip begins.

GOAT'S HEAD SOUP: Or why the Rolling Stones still needed Jimmy Miller

Stephen Thomas Erlewine at AllMusic.com calls this album "trippily decadent", which it is, no doubt about it. Erlewine also calls it excessive...and having worked with Jimmy Miller for a number of years I have some additional insight on what is probably the last great Stones record. True, it doesn't have the total magic of Exile On Main Street, Sticky Fingers, Let It Bleed and Beggar's Banquet, but it is the fifth of the "Jimmy Miller" era (I guess you can include ...one must include...the brilliant Through The Past Darkly, Big Hits Vol. 2)

Miller claimed that Keith played him a cassette of "It's Only Rock & Roll" and that the rough mixes were fantastic. The Glimmer Twins, somehow, lost the intuitive sparkly Jimmy Miller brought to the equation...sure he was a party boy, but at the end of the day he had the touch, he knew how to make a great record and even in his latter days when he was working with Buddy Guy, Genya Ravan, Aerosmith's Joe Perry and others with our production company on a very tight budget, he still brought his expertise and special skills to the game.

Prior to Rob Fraboni meeting Jimmy Miller, Miller had worked on a number of 45s and albums by The Rolling Stones, "Street Fighting Man", "Jumpin' Jack Flash", Beggar's Banquet, Let It Bleed, "Honky Tonk Women", "Brown Sugar", Sticky Fingers and Exile On Main Street.

Released in September of 1969, this album is a monster if you look back at it and think of the song structure, melody and how much fun these songs SOUNDED on the radio. It was a special time in large part to what The Beatles were doing with their colleagues, Mick, Keith and the gang, as so perfectly documented here. The British counterpart has some different tracks and certainly a different chronological arrangement of these classics, and perhaps both versions are worth owning

1.Paint It Black 3:23

2.Ruby Tuesday

3.She's A Rainbow

4.Jumpin' Jack Flash

5.Mother's Little Helper

6.Let's Spend The Night Together

7.Honky Tonk Women

8.Dandelion

9.2000 Light Years From Home

10.Have You Seen Your Mother Baby, Standing In The Shadow?

11.Street Fighting Man
